Star Free is a video game idea that I came up with during my time in Seattle that I have decided to revive and turn into real game.
It is a solo-dev passion project. In it you pilot a mech named Albatross. Together with Albatross the player will escape to the stars.
The game is a 3d platformer and bullet hell, inspired by the movement in armored core and the gameplay of Ikaruga.
Star Free
Albatross
Albatross is the main player character. They went through a lot of iterations. From concept art, to the first 3d model, to the final version imported into Unreal Engine 5.
UI
The main focus for the UI was designing a health bar that could function in game. I also created a mockup to experiment with in-game visuals.
Animation
I made animations for Albatross so they could fly. I even made some systems in Unreal Engine 5 so that I could test these animations and make sure that they worked in a game engine.
I am nearly done with my proof of concept for Star Free. Recently, I have been allowed more time to work on it. I have progressed from having one mechanic done to nearly all mechanics done in about a month. I won’t be feature complete for a while, as I plan to progress the design and storytelling parts of the game first, but I am confident that I can finish this project before I graduate from school. When it is complete, Star Free will be a full game available to play on steam.
